Why your business isn't showing up on Google Maps (and how to fix it)

If customers can't find you on Google Maps, you're missing the searches most likely to turn into calls. Usually it's one of a handful of fixable problems.

Google's map results (the "local pack") show a few businesses at the top of local searches. Google says local rankings are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your listing matches the search), distance, and prominence (how well known and trusted you are). Here's how to work through the common problems.

Start with the basics

1. You don't have a verified Google Business Profile

Search your business name on Google Maps. If you don't see your profile, or you see "Claim this business," create or claim it at business.google.com and complete verification. Unverified profiles generally won't show up the way you want.

2. Your profile is suspended or has issues

Log in and check for warnings. Suspensions often come from guideline problems like keywords stuffed into the business name or an address that doesn't qualify.

3. Your primary category is wrong

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Pick the most specific one that matches your main service (for example "HVAC contractor" rather than something generic), then add a few accurate secondary categories.

Make Google sure about what you do and where

4. Service areas are missing or unrealistic

If you travel to customers, set your service areas to the cities or counties you actually serve. Listing a huge area doesn't make you rank everywhere.

5. Your details don't match elsewhere

Your business name, phone, and website should match exactly across your profile, website, and major directories like Yelp, Bing, Apple, and BBB. Inconsistencies create doubt.

6. Your website doesn't back it up

Link your profile to a fast website with clear pages for your main services and the areas you serve. A thin or broken site weakens your listing.

Build prominence

7. Too few reviews

Reviews are a big part of trust. Make asking a habit: send happy customers your review link right after a job. Respond to every review, good or bad.

8. The profile looks inactive

Add real photos regularly, keep hours accurate, list your services, and post updates. An active profile gives customers more reasons to choose you.

9. Distance

Google shows businesses close to the searcher. You can't change that, which is why service-area pages and a strong reputation matter so much for reaching beyond your immediate neighborhood.

Be patient after changes. Some updates show up within days; others take weeks. And be wary of anyone who guarantees a #1 map ranking. Google decides the rankings, and no one can promise them.

A 30-minute checklist

  • Confirm your profile is claimed and verified.
  • Check your primary and secondary categories.
  • Set realistic service areas.
  • Make your name, phone, and website identical everywhere.
  • Add 10+ real photos.
  • List your services with short descriptions.
  • Send your review link to your last five happy customers.
